Experience

For 10+ years, I have worked as a professional tutor. Apart from working as an SAT instructor & curriculum developer at Integrated Educational Services located in Metuchen, NJ, I have enjoyed a premier rank on Wyzant.com where I have been consistently ranked as their top tutor in Central New Jersey for 5 years. (In 2014 I ranked among their top 0.5% of 75,000+ tutors nationwide, and in 2015 I was ranked among their Top 100 tutors nationwide.) For my expertise, I have either been hired or actively pursued by companies such as Veritas Prep, the TutorVerse, and Ivy Global, Y2 Academy, C2 Academy, Ivy Test Prep, Princeton Review, Kaplan & several start-ups. After teaching my very 1st SAT class, which I taught as a substitute for a certified high school teacher & highly experienced test prep instructor, I overheard one student tell her friends as they left the room: “For the first time since I started this course, I feel like I actually get this stuff. I hope this new teacher stays.” Her friends nodded in emphatic assent. From that moment, I have been hooked on teaching. Since then, I have expanded my repertoire of subjects to encompass virtually all of high school math (from algebra to calculus), essay writing (for school and college applications), & core sciences (physics, biology and chemistry) with great success. However, standardized test preparation – for the SAT (all sections), SAT Subject Tests, & AP exams – remains my specialty. I myself have scored in the 99th percentile on both the SAT & the GRE. Having written my own SAT curriculum, I have taught countless students of varying ability with outstanding results. I also teach the GRE, ACT, & the NEW SAT rolling out in 2016. MY SUBJECTS, MY APPROACHES, MY (AVERAGE) RESULTS *SAT/ACT/GRE PREP – RESULTS: SAT (all sections): Average improvement to overall score is 350+ points & sometimes as much as 480 - 600 points. Many perfect 800's across all 3 sections | GRE (revised test - all sections): improvements typically range from 8-16 points overall SEE WHAT THE “GENIUSES” SEE – Students often ask "How do I know when to use equation A or Formula B" & are baffled when their "smarter" classmates can apply new subject matter so easily. Yet these “smarter” students are simply those who spot clues/indicators that other students miss & know intuitively how to use that information. My teaching paradigm for standardized tests reduces to “If you see X, do Y”. My students learn to identify & interpret verbal/visual clues, selectively recruit applicable knowledge/facts from their memory, & develop smart, efficient approaches to gain a competitive edge over their peers. CONTENT + STRATEGY – On one side, the test prep industry is flooded with tutors/test prep companies that employ empty guessing tricks & needless general strategies that are no substitute for a true understanding/mastery of content. On the other side lie the tenured teachers/professors who advocate tired-out academic pedagogy & “teacher-like” presentation of the material that rarely helps anyone. I teach students the essential content (math/grammar, etc) in an intuitive, non-technical style and combine it with high-yield, content-based strategies that allow them to apply the content in a practical and relevant way. ELIMINATE WEAKNESSES – Studying on their own, few students can accurately identify their biggest weaknesses in ways that actually improve their performance. For example, if a student reviews a practice SAT & notices that he or she tends to get percent questions wrong, he or she has only skimmed the surface of the problem. Students rarely understand WHY they get certain questions wrong or how to avoid such errors. In other words, they don’t identify the specific aspect of their performance that needs improvement - i.e. setting up an equation, evaluating/solving correctly, interpreting the information in a problem, recognizing the problem-type, etc. When working with students, I target specific weaknesses in a student's performance to achieve the best results. *Math/Science (including Subject Tests and AP exams) - RESULTS: AP Calc/Bio: 100% have received a perfect 5 out of 5 | SAT Subject Tests in Math/Bio: 95% have scored 700+ with many perfect 800's| For High school math/science courses - students improve test grades by at least 1-2 full letter grades. CREATE KNOWLEDGE FRAMEWORKS: Suppose that you are learning Spanish. Would you memorize all the forms of the verb "tener = to have" such as "tengo = I have" or "tiene = he/she/it has" or "tenido = had", etc & then do the same for every verb? Of course not - you would learn the basic rules of grammar/conjugation, apply them to different verbs, & generate the forms yourself. In other words, you would use basic principles & themes to create a system or framework to process new knowledge. In the same way, I approach the learning a new subject as an act of applying basic principles to new situations instead of an act of rote memorization. When teaching a subject, (whether it is calculus or biology) I always create knowledge frameworks built on overarching principles & root concepts to promote both holistic thinking & an intuitive "big picture" view of the material. *Essay Writing – Recommended Approach: 2 sessions - 1 to create an outline/essay plan, & the other to proofread your first draft & improve grammar, clarity/force of verbal expression, & flow/continuity. LOCATIONS & POLICIES: I offer a single lesson as a “trial”; you will only pay if you are satisfied (i.e. you intend to continue) | I ONLY tutor at the following locations: Rutgers University New Brunswick/Piscataway campus; Barnes & Noble at Menlo Mall; Public libraries in Edison, Metuchen, & Iselin.
