My name is David Kosofsky. I graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, a top 15 ranked school by US News and World Report. I double majored in Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology and Spanish. I'm fluent in Spanish and have lived in South America for many months. I was in the 97th percentile in my SATs for my year across the country and have mastered all subject matters taught from elementary through high school. Plus, I have experience teaching and tutoring and know not only how to learn but how to present ideas in a way that are palatable to the individual in front of me. It feels important to note that I was cringing as I wrote that entire paragraph. I don't like placing my personal history on a pedestal to try to impress people. Unfortunately, we have to do things we don't want to do in certain situations, like I did here trying to attract you! But the truth is, more important than any of those little facts, is that I love people. I love human beings, individuals. I love knowledge and learning. I can help you prepare for the test, but that's not my goal. Secretly, I'm trying to open your heart to actually WANT to learn the material, because we're all naturally curious and natural learners when we feel safe and secure. My philosophy is to make it abundantly clear that my students are good enough as they are, regardless of the grade, and we can also learn what our teachers ask us to learn. I scored a 780 on my personal SAT Math, which means I got one question wrong on several sections of Math questions on my SAT. I've taught many people the fundamentals required to master SAT Math. I can do this sort of Math in my sleep and have a lot of pleasure teaching others it's elegance. During college, at a top 15 University in the United States, I took two writing classes. The mandatory 101 writing class as a freshman, and then hardest writing class in the school, a 400 level Exposition class. I loved and aced them both. I understand how to blend the technical and inspirational components that birth good writing. I worked for an elite educational technology company in Manhattan called Knewton. I spent my time there looking at teaching material and mapping it correspondingly to an online schema compared to Common Core qualifications. I know Common Core very well and can help kids feel comfortable reaching for those standards. Listen, a lot of people are smart. I don't think that's what distinguishes me from other Tutors. I'm really confident in two things. First is my ability to form deep human relationships. The second is that people are naturally good learners when they are emotionally supported. My philosophy is therefore human centered, not material centered. Of course I respect and understand the material. I also respect that there is a human being across the table from me, an individual, who like most of us has probably had the unpleasant experience of somebody trying to cram information down their throat. What makes me unique is my ability to open up a student's curiosity naturally, and let their own interest absorb the information.
